The founder passed the business to his son Scott Monthei in 2007, Scott along with key management personnel have combined experience exceeding 150 years in the industry. 1957
The beginning
M&M Plumbing, Heating & Cooling was founded in Indian River with just one truck and two employees. The early days were simple. A rented building, an oil stove for heat, and a commitment to serving the local community.
1960s - 1990s
Building a Reputation
The company steadily grew as more homeowners and businesses trusted M&M for dependable service. New employees joined the team, more trucks were added, and the foundation of long-term customer relationships was built.
2007
Passing to the Next Generation
Ownership of the company was passed to Scott, continuing the family legacy. The values established in the early years remained the same, with a focus on honest work, strong relationships, and reliable service.
2020 - Today
A New Facility for Growth
M&M moved to its current location on Tahoe Lane in Indian River.
The new space allows for better operations, indoor vehicle storage, and improved efficiency, supporting continued growth and better service for customers. After 65 years we are still serving the community we know and love.

What started with one truck and two employees has grown into a trusted team serving homes and businesses across Northern Michigan.
A Family Business Built on Hard Work
Our story begins in the 1950s.
- Dick began his career with a plumbing and heating apprenticeship in Flint
- He and his wife met in 1954 and married the following year
- They returned to Indian River with just $600 and a vision for something more
In the early years:
- The business operated out of a rented building on Sturgeon Street
- Heat came from a single oil stove during long Michigan winters
- Locals would stop in for coffee and conversation around that stove
Those moments shaped the culture you still experience today.
Growing With the Community
M&M was built step by step:
- Started with 2 employees and 1 truck
- Expanded services and added equipment over time
- Built lasting relationships with local homeowners and businesses
The company name comes from a partnership between Dick and his nephew Monte, reflecting the family roots that still define the business.
Passing It to the Next Generation
- Ownership transitioned to Scott in 2007
- Dick remained involved until his passing in 2008
- The same values of honesty, hard work, and service continue today

In 2020, M&M moved to its current location on Tahoe Lane in Indian River.
This allowed:
